Panthers score ten in fourth, routing the Green Giants
Orange, CA -- Fifth-ranked Chapman University (31-10) made a statement in its first game of the 2003 West Region playoffs. The Panthers sent 14 batters to the plate in a nine-run first inning, then 16 batters to the plate in a 10-run fourth inning and cruised to 20-0 win over St. Norbert (Wis.).
The victory sends the Panthers into a winner's bracket matchup with Northwest Conference champion George Fox University (Ore.), who defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 4-2, earlier in the day. First pitch will be at 11 a.m.
While the Panthers offense was doing its damage, the Chapman pitching staff was nearly unhittable. Starting pitcher Ryan France and reliever Al Lambert carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and five Chapman arms combined to one-hit the Green Knights, while striking out 16 batters.
Brian Lesandrini broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the sixth.
Of Chapman's 18 hits, 16 of them were singles. Matt Graves was 4-for-4 before leaving the game and Brian Sanders hit a three-run home run in the first inning, his sixth of the season. Lambert picked up his second win of the year in relief.
St. Norbert (17-17) will face Pomona-Pitzer in an elimination game at 3 p.m. on Friday.
