Orange, CA -- Mike Renery pitched a three-hit shutout and third-seeded Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) hit two home runs to give it a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded St. Norbert (Wis.) in the first elimination game of the NCAA Division III West Region baseball championships. The Sagehens advance to tonight’s 7:00 pm game versus host and top-seeded Chapman University (Calif.) for a chance to play in the regional championship game on Saturday versus George Fox University (Ore.).
Division III home run leader Jose Cortez led off the seventh inning with his 19th home run of the season and 69th of his career, pulling him within one of tying the all-time Division III career mark of 70 round-trippers. Pomona-Pitzer (30-10) built a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third, and sixth innings. Jase Turner hit a solo homer in the second inning, his 12th home run of the season, and finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Renery didn’t allow a hit over the final six innings to improve to 7-3 on the season. The right-hander struck out five Green Knights batters.
Leadoff batter Scott Kallback had a pair of hits, including a double for St. Norbert (17-18), which was eliminated from the playoffs with the loss.
The Sagehens earned matchup with Chapman, which they’ve beaten twice this season in three regular season games, including the regular season finale for both clubs, 8-4 on April 30.
