Orange, CA -- The top-seeded Chapman University (Calif.) Panthers snapped a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning on a bases-loaded hit batter, then went on to score twice more in the inning to advance to the NCAA Division III West Region championship round versus George Fox University (Ore.) on Saturday. With five runs in their final two at-bats, the Panthers eliminated third-seeded Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.), 5-2, overcoming a 2-0 late-inning deficit.
Leadoff batter Justin Hallenbeck drove in the game-winning run when he was hit with a pitch from Sagehens starter Alex Smith with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Chapman (32-11) had loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit, drawing a walk, a sacrifice bunt fielder’s choice, and a second hit batter. Shaun Donahoe followed with his third hit of the game, driving home two more insurance runs in the inning. The Panthers weren’t able to muster much off of Smith in the first six innings, stranding seven baserunners. Chapman rallied to tie the game in the seventh as Alex Taylor hit an RBI single – one of four hits for him – then the Panthers capitalized on a Sagehens’ fielding error to push across an unearned run.
Chapman starter Jairo Ochoa went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out nine batters for his eighth win of the season.
Jose Cortez, playing in his final collegiate game for Pomona-Pitzer (30-11), hit his Division III career record-tying 70th home run in the first inning off of Ochoa. Cortez stands with University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Tim Jorgensen atop the all-time HR list. It was also Cortez’s 20th home run this season.
Chapman will face George Fox on Saturday at 11:00 am in a championship round game. The Bruins will need to be defeated twice not to advance to the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin. George Fox defeated Chapman earlier on Friday, 8-6, sending the Panthers into the loser’s bracket.
