Orange, CA -- Chapman ace Ryan France (9-1), who pitched only two innings in the Panthers' first-round game, a 20-1 laugher over St. Norbert College, was on top of his game in the opener, allowing only 5 hits while striking out 10 with no walks.
Eric Bell had two of the hits off France, including a ringing double that hit halfway up the fence in deep right-center.
George Fox southpaw Cory Dixon (5-4) battled gamely against the Panthers, scattering 11 hits and surrendering only 3 earned runs, but got no offensive support.
The Panthers got off to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Justin Hallenbeck led off with a sharp grounder to second that was mishandled by Kevin Tucker but was generously scored as a single, and Shaun Donahoe reached on a bunt that was credited as a hit when no one covered first. Alex Taylor's bunt single to 3rd loaded the bases, and Hallenbeck scored as Matt Graves bounced into a 6-4-3 double play. Hallenbeck walked and Donahoe and Taylor followed with singles to make it 2-0 in the 3rd.
The Panthers got an unearned run in the 7th as Max Gruber singled, moved to second when Dixon fumbled C.J. Castillo's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Hallenbeck's single down the right field line. In the 8th, Chris Van Kamp singled inside the 3rd base bag, moved to 2nd on a ground out, and scored on Castillo's two-out single to center.
