Chapman Wins Regional, Advances to Championship

Orange, CA - In the finale, the Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the 1st on a pair of unearned runs. Stephen Donohue led off with a single to right, and David Peterson was safe when shortstop Brian Sanders made a wide throw to first. Bell walked, and Joshua Sargent delivered Donohue with a ground out to second. Kevin Tucker singled with two out to score Peterson, but the Bruins lost a third run when Bell collided with third baseman Gruber and the umpire ruled that Bell would not have scored, leaving him at third.

George Fox had entered the playoffs with the No. 1 defense in the nation at .970 (Chapman was No. 5 at .966), but the nornally-steady Bruin defense deserted them in the championship game.

The Panthers scored 4 unearned runs, starting with 2 in the 3rd. Tucker booted Jeff Levering's grounder, and pitcher Alex Bailey fumbled Gruber's sacrifice bunt. C.J. Castillo bunted them along, and Donahoe tied it with a two-out single to left. Donohue singled with two out, stole second, and scored on Peterson's single up the middle to give George Fox a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 4th, but the Panthers forged ahead 4-3 with two more unearned runs in the 5th. Chris Van Kamp reached on Peterson's error at short, Levering singled to center, Gruber sacrified them along, and Donahoe came through again with a singled that bounced high over Marc Buffington at 3rd and into left. Chapman added 2 insurance runs in the 7th and another in the 8th. Donahoe picked up his 5th RBI of the game by doubling in Gruber, who had singled, in the 7th, then scored himself on a hit by Taylor. Gruber homered to center in the 8th.

George Fox cut it to 7-5 in the 8th as Tucker doubled down the right-field line, Tye Tinner beat out an infield roller, Jake Johnson duobled to left-center for one run, and Tinner scored on Donohue's ground out. The Bruins went down in order in the 9th, however.

Both teams went to their bullpens for starters. Bailey (1-2) made his first start for the Bruins and worked 6 1/3 strong innings before tiring in the 7th, and wound up with the loss despite allowing only one earned run. His previous longest stint of the season had been 2 innings.

Scott Akamine (4-5), who got the loss in relief in the Bruins' 8-6 win on Friday, went the distance for the Panthers, allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 8 and walking 2.

Chapman will face the winner of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh/University of Wisconsin-Whitewater game in the Wisconsin Regional in the first game of the World Series on Friday.
