Grand Chute, Wisconsin - George Fox University is making the most of its first trip to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. The Bruins are the lone unbeaten team left in the finals after eliminating Aurora University with a 12-6 victory at Fox Cities Stadium.
George Fox is now 4-0 in the finals and will play for the title against Eastern Connecticut State University. Eastern Connecticut will have to beat the Bruins twice if it wants to win the championship. The Warriors are playing for the title for the second time in three years and have won the championship four times.
Aurora jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but George Fox (39-9) scored two runs in the second and four more in the third to take control early. George Fox's Greg Dombek (pictured above right), who went 2-for-4, blasted a two-run homer in the second. The Bruins then got a run-scoring single from Stephen Donohue, and David Peterson, who finished 2-for-5 with three RBI, later laced a two-run triple to highlight the four-run third inning.
Aurora (28-19) got back into it with a run in the third on Dan Gregory's sacrifice fly and two more runs in the fourth. Aurora's Brian Chelgren opened the fourth with a double, and Brian Brandenburg followed with a run-scoring double. Kevin Morris' run-scoring groundout plated Brandenburg to cut George Fox's lead to 6-4.
George Fox removed any doubt with two runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth. Tom Morris, who was 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Scott Mackey both delivered RBI singles in the eighth. The Bruins then scored four times in six hits in the ninth, highlighted by four run-scoring singles.
In an attempt to preserve its top pitchers for Tuesday's title game, George Fox used three pitchers, including freshman starter Brady Rhodes, who had thrown only 34 2/3 innings combined all season. Rhodes gave up four runs on four hits over three innings before giving way to Sean Hammon (pictured left). He earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season by allowing only one run on five hits over five innings. Peder Rauen pitched the final inning for the Bruins.
George Creviston took the loss for Aurora after giving up five runs over two-plus innings.
