Wisconsin-Whitewater makes second trip to Championship

Whitewater, Wisc. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the Whitewater Regional and advanced to the Division III Finals with a 7-4 win over the University of Saint Thomas at UW-W's Prucha Field. UW-W, the top seed in the regional, came in to the game 2-0, having defeated Concordia University 22-7 and Ripon College 5-3 in the regional tourney. Saint Thomas, the number two seed, lost to Ripon 12-11, then coming back into the regional title game with a 13-1 win over Concordia and 6-4 victory over Ripon.

Whitewater scored first Monday afternoon, plating a pair of runs by combining three hits, a walk, and an error. Pitcher Ryan Callahan drove in UW-W's third run with a single in the second inning.

The teams traded runs in the fourth, and the Tommies added another in the fifth to cut Whitewater's margin to 4-2. Freshman Justin Bushong, who came in to play third base after Eric Stangel succumbed to the stomach flu, stroked a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to make it 6-2 Whitewater.

The teams traded runs, again, in the seventh, and Saint Thomas added its final tally with the aid of a Whitewater error in the ninth.

Senior lefthander Ryan Callahan upped his record to 6-1, with relief help from Greg Rienhard and Kevin Tomasiewicz. Brian Krause, 9-6, took the loss for UST.

UW-W, 37-7, will be making its second appearance in the championship finals, having played in the 1989 series when it was hosted by Bristol, Connecticut. Saint Thomas ends the season with a 38-8 record.
