Golden Eagles get third straight complete game victory to advance to Championship
Troy, NY - Senior pitcher Jeff Wilson allowed just seven hits and two runs in a complete game to lead SUNY Brockport to an 8-2 victory over Ithaca College in the Championship Round of an NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y. With the victory, the second-seeded Golden Eagles improve to 33-13 and advance to their first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, in their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Ithaca, the top seed, finishes the season with a 34-8 record. Brockport jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning and added two more in the fourth. After Mike Ranalli led off the bottom of the first with a single, Joe Lux reached on a fielders choice. Lux came around to score when the next batter, Matt Johnson, doubled to left centerfield. Peterson then singled to put runners on first and third. Johnson then scored when Peterson was caught in a run-down attempting to steal second base. Johnson doubled the Golden Eagles lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when he belted a two-run home run to right field, scoring Lux, who had walked. Brockport added a fifth run one inning later when Schwegler singled and moved to second on a throwing error, was sacrificed to third base and scored on a base hit by Astalos. Ithaca answered with its first run in the top of the sixth inning but Brockport tacked on three more runs in its half of the stanza for an 8-1 lead. The Bombers broke the shutout on singles by Marty OBoyle and Pritts and a run-scoring fielders choice by Joe Cavano. The Golden Eagles opened their half of the sixth with a triple by Schwegler and an RBI single by Ryan Mohr. Astalos then walked and Tim Wilson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ranalli and John Morgan each knocked in runs with a pair of fielders choices for a seven-run lead. Ithaca added one run in the eighth inning for the final margin. Johnson finished the game with two hits, two runs and three RBI while Schwegler (2 for 4, 2 runs) and Astalos (2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI) also had multiple-hit efforts. For Ithaca, Pritts was 3 for 3 and McBride was 2 for 4. Starter Matt Lavoie suffered the loss. A righthander, Wilson was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Player after his performance, which included just one walk and six strikeouts. Also selected to the All-Tournament Team were teammates Rob Astalos, Ben Kimball, Shawn Mahoney, Andy Peterson, Jeff Schwegler and Tim Wilson. Kimball and Mahoney also pitched complete game victories to get the Golden Eagles to the Championship Round. Ithaca was represented on the All-Tournament Team by Eric Maya, Ben McBride and Mike Pritts.
