MANSFIELD, Conn. - Senior right-handed pitcher Joey Serfass won his sixth straight decision in NCAA post-season play with a complete-game four-hitter as the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team advanced in the winners' bracket of the NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Tournament with an 8-0 win over third-seeded Babson College.
Serfass, a second-team All-America last year, scattered three singles and a double. He struck out four without a walk and got 15 ground ball outs. Middle infielders Eugene Julien and Tom Koch combined for ten assists.
Senior rightfielder Dwight Wildman, the 2004 New England Player-of-the-Year, had three hits, drove in three runs and scored once in a 14-hit attack. Wildman tied John Kubachka's program season record of 146 total bases and 80 hits with his 16th home run of the year -- a two-run blast that gave Eastern a 7-0 lead in the fifth. It was the 33rd career home run for Wildman, which moves him into a tie for third all-time with Kubachka.
Koch, the No. 9 hitter in the order, drove in two runs with a sacrifice bunt in the second and a two-out single in the fourth. Julien was 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Junior All-New England righty Jimmy Burke lost for the second time in nine decisions. Burke gave up ten hits and seven runs through the first five innings. Phil McGinnis broke up Serfass' no-hit bid with a one-out single in the fifth. After a balk, Chris Mearn moved McGinnis to third but Serfass ended the inning with a strikeout.
