Wartburg Wins Second Regional Title
Bloomington, Ill. - The Wartburg Knights, ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division III, won their second regional baseball title since 2000 with an 11-3 victory over Edgewood College, eliminating Edgewood from the NCAA Division III Regional tournament. As a result, the Knights will represent the Central Region by advancing to next weeks eight-team NCAA Division III World Series. Head coach Joel Holst's team (35-9) extended its current win string to eight, opening a 6-0 lead for junior starting pitcher Tyler Archer (6-0) and never looking back. Freshman outfielder Kyle Blacker of Englewood, Colo., went four-for-four with three runs scored, while sophomore designated hitter Brandon Steinbrecher of Davenport drilled a home run and ended with three RBIs and two runs scored to highlight the 17-hit offensive attack. Highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles by John Fish and Andrew Handorf, Edgewood battled back to plate three in the bottom half of the fourth to get back within three, 6-3, but that was all the offense the Eagles could muster. Wartburg, which had a batter reach base in every inning, added another run in the top of the fifth and four more runs in the seventh to make the score 11-3. Blacker, Steinbrecher and junior pitcher Ryan Moorman of Boone were named all-tournament. for Wartburg. Fish, Handorf, and left-handed pitcher Dave Scheidel, who hurled a complete-game shutout over Washington University on Saturday, were named to the 11-person all-tournament team.
