Wooster claims fourth NCAA Division III Mideast Regional championship

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The College of Wooster claimed its fourth NCAA Division III Mideast Regional championship and its first since 1997 with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Otterbein College on Sunday at Rose-Hulman. The Scots advance to the NCAA Division III World Series to play the winner of the Auburn regional on Friday at 7:45 p.m.

"I'm really proud of the kids - they couldn't be a better group to coach. We had high expectations, and we're going to give it a great shot in Wisconsin. Our pitching depth was the difference this year, and those kids did a great job," said Wooster head coach Tim Pettorini.

Wooster shortstop Luke Ullman (pictured above left) slapped three hits, including his fifth double of the regional, and finished a perfect 28-28 in the field during the week to earn regional Most Valuable Player honors. "I came back for my fifth year to win the regional and go to the World Series. I'm thrilled, and I'm sure everyone on the team is enjoying it," said Ullman. Other key contributors for the victorious Scots included Mike Barone, with two hits and a two-run home run that knotted the score at 4-4 in the sixth inning. Jake Frank added a pair of singles.

The Wooster bullpen was the story, as Brett Glavan, Ryan Mullins and Luke Katich combined to pitch 5 1/3 scoreless innings and allow the Scots to rally from a 4-1 deficit to secure the win.

For Otterbein, Chris Martin and Pat Connor each had one hit, one run scored and one RBI to lead the offense. Doug Stevens tossed a scoreless pair of innings to give the Cardinals a chance for the final rally.

Otterbein jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings, courtesy of a four-run fourth inning. Mike Satanek started the rally with a single and advanced to second when Ben Titus was hit by a pitch. Martin later singled home one run, then Connor slapped a double to right center field to score the second run of the frame. Tyler Shaw added a sacrifice fly and Matt Wilson capped the rally with a single to left field.

Wooster rallied with one run in the fifth, courtesy of a double by Ullman, a fly out and a ground out by Frank. In the sixth, the Scots knotted the score at 4-4 with the two-run round tripper by Barone.

Wooster collected the winning run in the seventh inning, courtesy of a walk to Ross Yoder, a single by Frank and a hit by pitch to Kurt Kapferer. With one out, Rob Romick lined a sacrifice fly to left field to score Yoder with the eventual game-winning run.

Mullins improved to 6-0 on the season with two scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout. Katich recorded the final two outs for his third save of the regional.

Wooster improved to 37-7 on the season, while Otterbein completed the campaign with a 31-17 mark.
