Reinhard, Gnatzig named MVP in Warhawk win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Baseball Championship Final Series with a 7-4 win over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon at Prucha Field in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Whitewater, 41-7, will play the winner of the Harwick regional at 10:00 a.m. Friday.

Coming back after a win over Saint Scholastica Friday, UW-W righthander Greg Reinhard pitched the first seven innings, allowing three runs, five hits, one walk and he struck out eight. In his last three outings against the Pointers -- all Whitewater wins, Reinhard has pitched 21 innings, given up nine hits, four runs, walked four and struck out 30. Kevin Tomasiewicz pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit. Reinhard upped his record to 11-0 with Sunday's win.

After a scoreless first, UW-Whitewater plated four runs in the bottom of the second, one on first baseman Jeff Newcomer's single and three off a Dan Gnatzig home run. UW-W added three more in the fourth, with catcher Aaron Guilbault driving in two with his ninth home run of the season to make it 7-0 after four.

The Pointers got on the board in the top of the sixth. Rightfielder Matt Polomis doubled in one run, and second baseman Nat Richter delivered a two-run homer in the next at bat. Kevin Pankow kept UW-W off the board in his 2.2 innings of relief, but the Pointers were also done scoring.

UW-W and UW-SP played nine times in the last sixteen days. The school's ended the regular season with four games at Stevens Point, with Whitewater capturing the 2005 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. One week later, in the conference tournament, they met three times with the Pointers earning the league's automatic berth in the NCAA III tournament. In the Saturday's sixth game of the NCAA III regional UW-SP won, forcing the deciding contest Sunday.

Richter went 2x4 for the Pointers, and centerfielder Aaron Soto went 3x4 for the Warhawks. UW-W leftfielder Dan Gnatzig and Reinhard shared regional tourney Most Valuable Players honors.
