Boyertown, PA – Rowan University senior Irv McFarland hammered a pair of homeruns and freshman Ryan Kulick threw a complete-game as the top-seeded Profs beat #2 DeSales, 12-1, in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Baseball Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bear Stadium. The Profs improve to 40-7 this season and advance to the Regional Championship game. DeSales (35-9) will play the winner of Saturday night’s Alvernia/Messiah game Sunday at 10:00 a.m. for the right to play Rowan Sunday afternoon. A Rowan win on Sunday afternoon would send the Profs to the World Series, a loss would force the if-necessary game on Monday.
Rowan junior Matt Enuco rapped a one-out single to center in the top of the first, but was forced out at second to end the inning.
DeSales leadoff hitter Dan Fratantoro singled to open the home half of the first, but was promptly picked off by Kulick. Senior Nolan Neiman followed with a single and after a foul out Kulick’s move to first got Neiman to end the inning. Rowan put its first two runs on the board in the top of the second. Brian McLaughlin, who walked with one out, was erased on a Jim Comprelli fielder’s choice, and McFarland followed with his first homer to left.
Kulick got DeSales in order in the bottom of the second and Rowan put seven on the board in the top of the third for a commanding 9-0 lead. Junior leadoff Frank Galeota started things with a single to center, scoring on a Mike Rucci singled to right. Bryan Ciconte and McLaughlin added RBI hits, and Comprelli plated another on a ground ball to short. Comprelli swiped second with one out and McFarland smashed his second homerun to left in as many innings to put the Lions up 9-0.
DeSales reliever Jon Pallone pitched well for the Bulldogs keeping the Profs off the board for four straight innings, but Kulick matched zeros through the seventh inning.
DeSales put a pair of runners on in the fourth and one in the sixth, but both threats were cut short on ground ball double plays.
Leading 9-0 after seven, the Profs tacked on two runs in the top of the eighth on Enuco’s two-run single, and their final run on a McFarland solo homer in the ninth.
DeSales senior Ian Hauze spoiled the shutout and extended his current hitting streak to 23 games with a solo homer in the home half of the ninth. The DSU hitting streak record is 25 games, which Hauze could achieve if the Bulldogs reach the Championship game.
