St. Louis, Mo., May 18, 2006 -Top-seeded Carthage College bounced back for a 18-3 win Thursday against fifth-seeded Webster University at the NCAA Central Region Championship. With the win, Carthage improves to 34-8, while Webster closes out its season with a 26-18 record.
Senior Steve Mueller led off the bottom of the first with a double down the right-field line, and he scored on a groundout by junior Matt Adams to give Webster a 1-0 lead. Carthage responded in the top of the third with four runs of its own. Freshman Chris Shannon notched an RBI triple, sophomore Boe Baitinger had an RBI single, and senior Warren Even added an RBI double to give Carthage the momentum. Even later scored from third base on a wild pitch. Baitinger scored four runs on the day.
The Red Men added four more runs in the fourth inning to help put the game out of reach. Even finished 5-for-6 on the day with seven RBI; he also hit for the cycle (two RBI-singles, RBI double, RBI triple, two-RBI home run). Senior Sergio Simental also went 4-for-6, and classmate Jon Olson (7-1) picked up the win on the mound. Junior Ryan Hoffman went 2-for-4 with one run to lead Webster.
Carthage moves on in Regional play and will resume action Friday. CC's opponent and time will be announced later today.
