Boyertown, PA (May 17, 2006) – Senior Ted Serro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave up just one run on four hits in seven innings to lead fifth-seeded Franklin & Marshall past #4 Gwynedd-Mercy, 14-1, in game one of the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Wednesday morning at Bear Stadium.
F&M will advance to the winners bracket and face the top-seeded College of New Jersey Wednesday night in game four at 8:00. Gwynedd-Mercy moves to the losers bracket and is schedule to play Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
Franklin & Marshall took advantage of the first of three Gwynedd-Mercy errors to plate a pair of runs in the second inning. Senior Stephen Frederick (Downingtown, Pa.) lifted a high fly ball to left field with two outs that was in and out of the glove of GMC leftfielder Chris Corkery (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Diplomats took advantage of extra out quickly plating Frederick on a Rich Gallugi (Peabody, Mass.) double, and Jon Compitello (Yardley, Pa.) brought Gallugi around with a single to rightfield.
The Griffins were given an extra out in the home half of the second when Pat O’Reilly (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) couldn’t hold on to the Gary Kruger (East Islip, N.Y.) throw cutting across the bag at first, but were unable to take advantage. Serro hit Matt Martin (Pottstown, Pa.) to put two on with two out, but the 6-4 righty got an inning-ending ground ball to escape unscathed.
Gwynedd-Mercy reliever Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa.) used a pair of groundball double plays to get through the third and fourth innings without allowing a run, and the Griffins cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Troy Peiffer (Royersford, Pa.) opened the fourth with a single to rightfield and moved up to third on back-to-back ground outs to second base.
Senior Ryan McMahon (Upper Darby, Pa.) delivered the two-out RBI single to centerfield to score the first Griffin run. F&M needed just three batters to get the run back when Tom Miller (York, Pa.) walked to open the fifth and scored on a Rob Stern (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) double to deep center. Senior Eric Milavsky (Meford, N.J.) who singled in front of Stern tried to score from first on the play, but was blocked out on the tag by GMC catcher J.B. Meadows (Pennsville, N.J.). Reynolds induced a fielder’s choice to third to get Stern at the plate and after an O’Reilly single got Corey Caruthers (Conestoga, Pa.) on a groundball to second to end the inning.
Serro continued to keep the Griffins off balance through the middle innings. He got help from Frederick to end the fifth when the senior catcher cut down Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa.) trying to steal second. Serro set down the Griffins in order in the sixth and the Diplomat offense continued to click off a bevy off Griffin relievers in the bottom of the inning.
Reynolds walked a pair to start the inning and gave way to Pat Rider (Lansdale, Pa.) who’s day lasted just one pitch as he was lifted after a sacrifice bunt by Compitello. Lee McInerny (Philadelphia, Pa.) replaced Rider and recorded the second out of the inning on a ground ball after a passed ball allowed Gallugi to score. Back-to-back singles from the top of the Diplomats’ lineup brought in another run and Kruger drove home two more with a double to the gap in left center. Following a walk to O’Reilly, Joe Harris (Norristown, Pa.) became the fourth pitcher of the inning for the Griffins and retired Caruthers on a groundball back to the mound to end the inning.
F&M scored two unearned runs off Harris in the seventh and Serro hit Anthony Cappella (Philadelphia, Pa.) to open the bottom of the frame. He finished his day when Caruthers and O’Reilly teamed up to get Capella trying to score from second on a Meadows single to right to end the seventh.
The Diplomats, who scored seven unearned runs, plated three of them in the eighth and added a pair of runs in the ninth. Matt Kalos (Melrose Park, Pa.) and Don Tischler (New York, N.Y.) threw an inning apiece and both pitched around trouble in the eighth and ninth respectively to finish the game.
