Boyertown,, PA (May 20, 2006) – Senior starter Michael Vicaro (Randolph, N.J.), pitching on three days rest, threw five innings of shutout ball, and sophomore Kevin Dalton (Edison, N.J.) completed the shutout to lead second-seeded Montclair St. to a 7-0 win over #3 Kean in the losers bracket final of the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium. MSU will face the top-seeded College of New Jersey in Saturday’s final starting at 4:00 p.m. A Montclair win would for the if necessary game which is scheduled for Sunday at noon. The Regional winner will advance to the Division III College World Series in Appleton, Wisc.
Kean sophomore Ryan Clark (Livingston, N.J.) doubled to start the game and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Ammirata (Hamilton, N.J.), but was stranded when Joe D’Andrea (Hamilton, N.J.) was caught stealing and Vicaro fanned Mike Shymanski (Edison, N.J.) looking to end the inning.
MSU put its first two runs on the board in the home half of the first inning on a one-out triple off the bat of Rob Bowness (Sparta, N.J.). Sophomore Rob Clark (Livingston, N.J.) failed to get the squeeze bunt down and Bowness was caught in a rundown between third and home for the second out, and Brandon Aich (South Amboy, N.J.) struck out Clark to end the first.
MSU centerfielder Michael Nunes (Hazlet, N.J.) ended the Kean second gunning down Derek Gianakis (Edison, N.J) trying to go first to third on a Keith Edgar (Carteret, N.J.) single, and Vicaro set down the Cougars in order in the third. The 6-foot senior worked around a one-out single in the fourth and struck out Eric Ammirata (Hamilton, N.J.) with two on to end the fifth ending his day with four punch-outs.
Lou Politan (Livingston, N.J.) walked with one out in the fifth, stole second, and took third on a throwing error by Kean catcher, Kevin O’Neill (Union, N.J.). Freshman Scott Evangelist (Northfield, N.J.) followed with an RBI single and the Red Hawks led 3-0 after five innings.
Dalton took over for Vicaro to start the sixth and faced the minimum through three innings, giving up just one base runner when he plunked his second batter of the day. The Red Hawk offense sealed the victory with four additional runs in the bottom of the eighth. Kevin Cuozzi (Langhorne, Pa.) was hit to start the inning and advanced to third on back-to-back bunts. Brian Butler (Wyckoff, N.J.) followed with a two-out walk and four straight singles put the home team up 7-0.
Kean finally reached Dalton for its first hits off the reliever when Mark Blevins (Edison, N.J.) and Perry Schatzow (Ocean, N.J.) stroked two-out singles to rightfield in the bottom of the ninth. Dalton then retired Gianakis on a pop out to second to end the game.
Bowness finished the day 3-for-4, including a bunt base hit during and intentional walk, with three RBIs and a run scored. Butler went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
