Boyertown, PA (May 20, 2006) –Freshman Scott Evangelist (Northfield, N.J.) hit a bouncing ball to first that The College of New Jersey tried to turn into a game-ending double play, but the return throw sailed wide allowing Rob Clark (Livingston, N.J.) to score from second base giving second-seeded Montclair St. a 2-1 comeback win over top-seeded TCNJ in game 11 of the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium.
The Red Hawks (32-17-2) loaded the bases with one out against reliever Bill Opel (Bayonne, N.J.) on a hit and two walks. First baseman Blake Bullis (Delran, N.J.) threw down to second to force Lou Politan (Lilvingston, N.J.) at second, but the return throw from back to Bullis missed the target.
MSU evened up the season series with conference foe TCNJ (38-7) at 3-3 and forced the in necessary game on Sunday at noon. The winner on Sunday will play Aurora University on Friday in its opening game of the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wisc.
TCNJ starter Brian Kraus (Feasterville, Pa.) allowed base runners in five of the first six innings, but escaped unscathed each time. Sophomore Michael Nunes (Hazlet, N.J.) singled up the middle to lead off the game and made it all the way to third, but was stranded when designated hitter Rob Bowness (Sparta, N.J.) grounded out to second.
The Red Hawks were retired in order in the second and Kraus stranded runners at second and third in the third. Sophomore catcher Kevin Cuozzi (Langhorne, Pa.) walked with one out and stole second. Senior Danny Rodriguez (South Brunswick, N.J.) singled and took second on a wild pitch with two outs, but Brian Butler (Wyckoff, N.J.) grounded out to first to end the threat.
Bowness led off the fourth getting hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch and was safe at third when TCNJ shortstop Mike Bruschini’s (Lawrenceville, N.J.) throw hit him in the back after he fielded Andrew Vicaro’s (Randolph, N.J.) grounder.
MSU starter Ray Anderson (North Caldwell, N.J.) matched Kraus’ efforts through five innings. The Lions had runners on first and second with two out in the third and failed to score, and Andrew Cosgrove (Lebanon, N.J.) reached on a one-out double to left in the fourth, but couldn’t advance.
Both pitchers worked around serious trouble in the fifth and Opel, making his 12th appearance in relief, picked off Vicaro to end the sixth before throwing his first pitch of the day.
The Lions broke through in the home half of the sixth with a single by Jeff Botti (Avenel, N.J.), a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single off the bat of junior designated hitter PJ Anzelone (Vernon, N.J.).
Opel worked through the seventh and the eighth in order and MSU reliever Chris Schindler (Bayonne, N.J.), who earned the win working 1.2 scoreless innings, ended the eighth getting a line drive double play.
One base runner in the bottom of the ninth for TCNJ would have brought New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Gerard Haran (Old Bridge, N.J.), who won the NJAC Tournament with a walk-off grand slam, to the plate with a chance to win it, but Schindler retired the Lions in order to earn his second win of the season.
