Boyertown, PA (May 17, 2006) – Senior Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md.) surrendered just one run in 5.2 innings to pick up his 10th win of the season, and Allen Peake (Fredricksburg, Va.) knocked in Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) three times to lead sixth-seeded Frostburg St. to a 6-2 upset win over #2 Montclair St. Wednesday afternoon in game two of the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium. Frostburg will face the winner of the #6 Alvernia/#3 Kean game on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Montclair will face the loser of Alvernia/Kean in the first elimination game of the tournament on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
Hollister walked Michael Nunes (Hazlet, N.J.) to open the home half of the first and Robert Clark (Livingston, N.J.) knocked him in with a two-out single to left. With runners at the corner, Hollister limited the damage picking Clark off first to end the inning.
The visiting Bobcats quickly got the run back in the top of the second inning. Barone, who scored half of FSU’s runs, doubled to open the inning and scored on a Peake single to the left center gap. Montclair starter Michael Vicarro (Randolph, N.J.) struck out Bryan Short (Ashburn, Va.) for the second out of the inning and got a fly ball to center to strand a pair.
Hollister allowed just two Red Hawk baserunners over the next three innings as the Bobcats built their lead. A walk and four hits in the fourth led to three runs for FSU as it built a 4-1 lead after four. Barone started things with the free pass and following a sacrifice bunt, three straight singles and a sacrifice fly plated three runs. The Bobcats pushed their lead to 5-1 with a single run in the fifth inning. Barone walked with one out, took second on a Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md.) single to right, third on a walk, and scored his third run of the day when Peake smacked a single to center.
Hollister surrendered an uneared run in the sixth inning, his final inning of work. Danny Rodriguez (South Brunswick, N.J.) hit a fly ball to leftfield that Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va.) couldn’t handle. He moved up to second on a single and scored when Clark singled to left. Hollister nearly ended the inning with a fielder’s choice ground ball, but instead was pulled for John Micklus (La Plata, Md.) with two on and two out. Micklus brought the tying run to the plate with a walk, but ended the Montclair threat with a strikeout.
A brief rainstorm led to a 27-minute delay with one on and one out in the top of the sixth. MSU reliever Kevin Dalton (Edison, N.J.), who got one out before the rains came, gave up a single to Mahan on the first pitch after the delay, and Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va.) followed with a sac fly to right for a 6-2 FSU lead.
Micklus worked around a one out walk in the seventh and stranded a pair of MSU runners in the eighth. MSU sophomore Kevin Cuozzi (Langhorne, Pa.) opened the ninth with a bunt base hit and moved up on a walk. A line out to right preceded another walk and MSU had the tying run back at the plate with one out. Rob Bowness (Sparta, N.J.) lifted a fly ball to left, but it was not deep enough to score the run and Micklus struck out Clark to end the ballgame.
