Boyertown, PA (May 17, 2006) – Sophomore starter Bob Buskett (Trenton, N.J.) threw nine strong innings giving up four hits and no runs, and Blake Bullis (Delran, N.J.) and Andrew Cosgrove (Lebanon, N.J.) provided the offense with a pair of home runs as the top-seeded College of New Jersey defeated #5 Franklin & Marshall, 3-0 Wednesday evening in game four of the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium.
Buskett allowed base runners in four of the first five innings, but retired the last 13 batters he faced as the Lions moved into the winners bracket where they will face the winner of the #7 Frostburg St./#3 Kean game on Friday at noon. F&M, the only team to play twice on Wednesday, will play Thursday against the winner of the tournament’s first elimination game between #6 Alvernia and #2 Montclair St.
Both pitchers tossed scoreless innings for the first five Wednesday evening. F&M senior Jeremy Knox (Bronx, N.Y.) pitched around base runners in each of the first four innings.
The biggest early threat for TCNJ came in the fourth when the Lions put two on with one out, but Knox got out of trouble with back-to-back fly balls to rightfield. TCNJ sophomore Bob Buskett (Trenton, N.J.) was aided by ground ball double plays in the first and fourth innings. He set down the Diplomats (29-10) in order in the second and worked around a one-out single in the third.
F&M had its first serious threat in the fifth putting a pair of runners on with one out, but Jon Compitello (Yardley, Pa.) grounded into a fielder’s choice and Tom Miller (York, Pa.) popped out to first base to end the inning. Knox set down the first two batters in the home half of the fifth before Bullis smacked a solo home run to leftfield to break the scoreless tie. Senior rightfielder Chris Wilson (Point Pleasant Beach, , N.J.) followed with a single to left, but was throw out trying to steal second to end the Lions’ sixth.
Buskett came back with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh and Rich Kropp (Pottstown, Pa.) opened the home half with a single and scored on a long home run to left by Cosgrove. The Lions put another runner on with two out, and Knox stranded him with a ground ball to first. Buskett got two fly balls to center and a pop out in the eighth and finished in style with back-to-back strikeouts in the ninth.
