Boyertown, PA (May 18, 2006) – Third-seeded Kean University scored eight of its 10 unearned runs in the fifth inning of a 12-5 win over #7 Frostburg St. Thursday afternoon in game six of the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium. Kean, which was just two outs from suffering its seventh straight NCAA Regional game loss on Wednesday night, has now earned its first two Regional wins and will face top-seeded TCNJ Friday at noon in the winners bracket final. Frostburg St will face Gwynedd-Mercy in the third elimination game of the tournament Thursday evening at 8:0 p.m.
Frostburg St. (28-12) held a 4-0 lead through four full innings, but committed two of its four errors in the fifth as the Cougars sent 12 batters to the plate scoring eight runs on just five hits. FSU had two outs in the fifth and no runs across, but couldn’t close the frame. Sophomore Eric Ammirata (Hamilton, N.J.) laced a single to the gap in right center midway through the fifth to knock in two of his game-high three RBIs, and Aaron Richard (Plainfield, N.J.) knocked home two with a double off FSU reliever Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y.).
Frostburg St. took the lead with four runs in the third inning. Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va.) led off with a double and after a two were retired, the Bobcats loaded the bases with a hit batter and a walk. Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va.) followed with a two-out, two-run single to right center and after a walk to Brian Short (Ashburn, Va.), Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va.) stroked a carbon copy to plate another pair.
Kean got on the board with an unearned run in the fifth. Ryan Clark (Livingston, N.J.) reached with two out, stole second and scored on a throwing error. Each of the first 10 runs scored by the Cougars were unearned.
The visitors finally posted a pair of earned runs in the top of the ninth on three base hits and a stolen base.
Kean sophomore Andrew Cupido (South Plainfield, N.J.) earned the win in relief of stater Nick Cesare (South Plainfield, N.J.) who left after a leadoff walk in the fourth. Cupido threw 5.2 innings allowing just one run on one hit, a one-out home run by Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the eighth. He allowed no walks and struck out four to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Richard collected three of the Cougars’ 15 hits. All three were doubles. Ammirata finished the day 2-for-6 with a run scored and three RBIs, and four other Cougars collected two hits including Keith Edgar (Carteret, N.J.) who scored a game-high three runs.
