Boyertown, PA (May 19, 2006) – Seventh Seeded Frostburg State University kept its NCAA Division III College World Series hopes alive as sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, VA) singled home fellow sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, MD) in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat fourth seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College in game eight of the 2006 NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional on Friday morning at Bear Stadium.
The Bobcats (29-12 overall) now advance to play second seeded Montclair State University in the semifinals of the loser’s bracket on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. The Griffins season comes to an end with a 31-15 overall record.
Sophomore John Micklus (La Plata, MD) went the distance improving to 7-3 on the season. He scattered 10 hits, allowed two runs, walked five batters and struck out six. Micklus also picked off two Griffin runners and caught another stealing second on a pick-off throw to first base.
GMC had taken an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Troy Peiffer (Royersford, PA) plating freshman Ken Bengston (Jamison, PA) who had doubled with one out.
FSU tied the game in the third with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by junior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, VA). The Griffins regained control in the fifth on a solo home run from junior Matt Martin (Pottstown, PA) over the right-center field fence but the Bobcats again tied the score with a single run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single from junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, MD).
In the ninth, Daddura singled with one out and moved to second base after sophomore Andrew Speights (Stafford, VA) walked. Freshman Bryan Short (Ashburn, VA) bunted both runners up one base before Mitchell came thru with a single just past a diving second baseman to end the game.
Junior Josh Thomas (Severn, MD) suffered the loss falling to 8-2 on the year. Thomas allowed nine hits, three runs (two earned) and struck out five Bobcat hitters.
Bengston, senior Ryan McMahon (Upper Darby, PA) and Martin each had two hits for the Griffins.
Jones finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases and Speights was also 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the FSU bat attack.
