Boyertown, PA (May 19, 2006) – Top Seeded The College of New Jersey used another stellar pitching performance to advance to the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship defeating Third Seeded Kean University, 3-1, in game nine on Friday afternoon at Bear Stadium.
Sophomore Brad Kittle (Millville, NJ) earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the year tossing 6 1/3 shutout innings allowing five hits and striking out five. Junior Bill Opel (Bayonne, NJ) tossed the final 2 2/3 innings to record his first save of the season. Opel allowed just one hit, a solo home run in the ninth inning, to go along with two strikeouts.
TCNJ broke open a scoreless tie in the seventh when junior Andrew Cosgrove (Lebanon, NJ) knocked home senior Rich Kropp (Pottstown, PA) with an RBI double. Cosgrove scored two batters later on an RBI groundout from junior Dan Czepiga (Lawrenceville, NJ) to give the visitor’s a 2-0 lead.
The lead swelled to 3-0 in the eighth when junior Blake Bullis (Delran, NJ) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single from senior Chris Wilson (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ).
The loss drops the Cougars (31-16), who scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run to left-field off the bat of freshman Mike Shymanski (Edison, NJ), to the loser’s bracket. KU will face the winner of the Montclair State/Frostburg State game which is slated to start at 7:00 pm on Friday evening.
Junior Daniel Zeffiro (Old Bridge, NJ) took the loss for Kean falling to 5-6 on the year. Zeffiro tossed a complete-game allowing 10 hits and three runs along with four strikeouts.
Junior Joe D’Andrea (Hamilton, NJ) had three of the Cougar’s six hits in the loss.
Seven Lions recorded hits including Kropp who had three hits and Cosgrove who tallied two doubles. #1 The College of New Jersey
