TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Manchester College scored one run in the eighth and two in the ninth to defeat top seeded College of Wooster 5-4 in game four of the NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional at Rose-Hulman on Thursday.
Wooster led 4-2 in the fourth inning when the game resumed early Thursday following an overnight rain delay. Manchester pitcher Mitch Waters tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory and improve to 7-1 on the season.
With the Scots clinging to a 4-2 lead, Manchester catcher Michael Shearer hit a leadoff home run in the eighth inning to bring the Spartans within 4-3. In the ninth, Wooster left-hander Adam Samson allowed consecutive singles to Scott Tarnowski and Brock Treesh. Zach Bireley flied out to center field, then George Mallett ground out to third base, advancing the runners to second and third. Danner Partridge was walked to load the bases with two outs. Shearer then lofted a bloop single to left field to score Tarnowski and Treesh with the eventual winning runs.
In the Wooster ninth, Rob Romick slapped a single but the Scots could not place the potential tying run in scoring position.
Shearer finished 2-4 with three RBIs, while Treesh was 2-4 with two runs scored and a two-run home run to lead the Manchester offense. Jake Sankal and Brandon Boesieger paced the Wooster offense with home runs. Boesieger had three hits and one RBI, while Sankal, Shaun Swearingen and Rob Romick tallied two hits each.
Manchester improved to 35-9 on the season and returns to action on Saturday at noon against either Marietta or Elizabethtown. Wooster (38-8) returns to action at 5 p.m. today against the winner of game five.
