Harwich, Massachusetts (May 17, 2006) – In the 2006 NCAA Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference Baseball Regional, No. 4 Salem State College (34-6) defeated No. 5 University of Southern Maine (20-16) by a score of 8-5. Salem State will take on No. 1 seed Wheaton College tonight at 8 p.m., while Southern Maine will play again tomorrow, May 18 at 8 p.m.
This is the Vikings third appearance in NCAA play and marks their first ever baseball victory in an NCAA tournament. In addition, the win breaks a school record for single season wins with 34. S
alem State lost the lead only once throughout the game when Southern Maine’s Ryan Borque hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to give the Huskies their first lead of the game at 5-4.
The Vikings came back in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead and forge ahead for the win. First baseman Jason Sablone hit a two-run double to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, to go up 6-5.
Third baseman Mike Addessa secured the win with his second homerun of the year driving in two runs, to end the game 8-5.
