Harwich, Massachusetts (May 19, 2006) – In the 2006 NCAA Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference Baseball Regional, No. 5 University of Southern Maine (31-16) defeated No. 3 Middlebury College (26-11) by a score of 12-10. With the win, Southern Maine will take on No. 6 Western New England College at approximately 8:20 p.m. this evening, May 19.
University of Southern Maine took an early 4-0 lead with the help of a double from Chris Burleson and Ryan Borque’s first of four RBI.
Middlebury’s bats heated up in the bottom of the third and the Panthers plated five runs on four hits. Alex Casnocha led off the inning with a homer to left and four others touched home plate to take the lead 5-4.
The Huskies tied it up in the sixth when Bourque hit a 3-run homerun and regained the lead with the help of Eddie Skeffington’s triple. By the time the Panthers took the plate in the bottom of the eighth, USM led 12-8.
Middlebury battled back in the bottom of the inning, and closed the gap 12-10 when Ryan Armstrong landed a triple and John Lanahan tagged an RBI triple. But the Panthers went quietly in the ninth and could not close the gap.
