Harwich, Massachusetts (May 19, 2006) – In the 2006 NCAA Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference Baseball Regional, No. 5 University of Southern Maine (32-16) defeated No. 3 Western New England College (35-12) by a score of 6-3. With the win, Southern Maine will face on No. 1 Wheaton College in the regional finals tomorrow, May 20 at noon.
It was a scoreless game until the sixth inning when Southern Maine capitalized on Golden Bear errors, hitting a slew of singles and scoring three unearned runs. Western New England’s Chris Newell scored on a sacrifice by Jason Connelly ending the sixth 4-1.
The Golden Bears battled the deficit and came within one (4-3) in the top of the eighth on two unearned runs, but the Huskies answered back. Brent Lemieux hit a double and Jordan Yanni tagged an RBI single to increase their lead 5-3. Joe Ganley closed out the eighth with an RBI double down the left field line to end the inning 6-3.
Pitcher Pat Foley closed out the game for the Huskies striking out one and watching two routine outs as Southern Maine advance to the regional finals.
This is not Southern Maine’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament as they were NCAA Champions in both 1997 and 1999.
Western New England finished the season 35-12, the best in school’s history
