HARWICH, MA- Sophomore southpaw Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) broke Wheaton College baseball's eight-year-old, single-season strikeout record after fanning 12 Salem State College batters, leading the top-seeded Lyons to a 5-2 victory over the fourth-seeded Vikings in the teams' first meeting at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament at Whitehouse Field. Falling one strikeout shy of the single-game mark, McDonough's season mark of 70 surpassed Nate Vedrani's twice-set 69 during the 1998 campaign. McDonough improves to 7-1 overall after allowing one earned run on 10 hits with two walks in seven innings of work.
Wheaton, ranked sixth nationally and first in New England by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), saw its record improve to 36-8, which is one victory shy of the program-high 37 wins set in 2002. The Lyons get a day off tomorrow and will return to action on Friday at 12:00 p.m. against the winner of number two Saint Joseph's College (ME) and sixth seed Western New England College. Salem State, now 34-7, awaits the winner of third-seeded Middlebury College and number seven Bowdoin College for a 4:30 p.m. start tomorrow.
McDonough set the tone early after striking out the side in each of the first two innings, and the Lyons provided early run support with one run in the first, two in the second and one in the third. Hometown product junior Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA/Harwich) drove in Wheaton's first run with a single to short, classmate Travis Anthoine (Portland, ME/Portland) and sophomore Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) plated runs in the second, and junior Brandon Leonard (Brockton, MA/Brockton) singled home Laplante in the third for a 4-0 advantage.
The Vikings stranded six runners through the first three frames, and McDonough shut the door in the fifth and the sixth with a combined four shutouts. Salem State got to McDonough in the top half of the seventh, scoring a run off an RBI double from sophomore Rob Celentano (Peabody, MA).
The Vikings picked up another run in the eighth after loading the bases, and with two outs and two runners on senior closer Jamie Baker (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) forced a groundout to second to end the threat.
Baker finished the save opportunity with a 1-2-3 ninth, fanning his first batter while inducing two straight groundouts to end the game. Baker, who entered the contest ranked in a tie for sixth nationally in saves, recorded his ninth save of the season. Freshman righty Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West), who relieved McDonough in the eighth, struck out one batter and walked one in 0.2 innings of work.
Leonard and Anthoine turned in solid offensive performances from the eight and nine holes, respectively. Leonard went 3-for-4 with one RBI, one run and a stolen base, while Anthoine was 2-for-2 with two runs, a pair of walks and one RBI.
Celentano batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for the Vikings, while senior Andy Lougee (Lynn, MA) was 2-for-3 with a walk. Junior hurler Talal Saleh (Lynn, MA) suffered his first loss of the season, yielding five earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and five walks in five innings.
