Harwich, Massachusetts (May 18, 2006) – In the 2006 NCAA Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference Baseball Regional, No. 5 University of Southern Maine (30-16) defeated No. 2 St. Joseph’s College (34-10-1) by a score of 10-1. Southern Maine will face Middlebury College tomorrow, May 19 at 3:30 p.m.
Freshman Chris Burleson led the way for the Huskies on the mound, going the distance and earning the win. He threw 142 pitches and fanned an impressive 13 batters.
Southern Maine’s Eddie Skeffington started the scoring off in the bottom of the second with a homerun to left center as USM took a 1-0 lead. St. Joseph’s Jake Rodden struck back in the top of the third with a triple down the right line and a run to tie it up. The teams ended the third tied at one.
Husky junior Ryan Bourque had an RBI single to right putting USM up 2-1 as they headed into the fourth inning. Southern Maine increased their lead when Max Arsenault hit a homerun, and Josh Stowell and Jeff Skillen scored to increase the Husky lead 5-1. Mike D’Andrea followed suit hitting a two-run homer to end the forth 7-1. The Huskies secured the win when Skillen drove in Skeffington. Skillen went on to score USM’s second run of the inning to make the score 9-1.
In the top of the ninth, Bourque drove in Burleson to cap Southern Maine’s scoring at 10
. The Monks turned a double play in the ninth before they tried their last luck on a comeback. St. Joseph’s could not overcome Burleson who earned the last three outs by strikeout.
Mark Clap and Wade Oliver each went 2-for-4 for the Monks.
