Harwich, Massachusetts (May 19, 2006) – In the 2006 NCAA Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference Baseball Regional, No. 1 Wheaton College (37-8) defeated No. 6 Western New England College (35-11) by a score of 6-0. With the win, Wheaton moves to the regional final tomorrow Saturday, May 20 at noon and Western New England will take the field this evening May 19 in Game 11 at 8 p.m.
Wheaton and Western New England aced each other four times throughout the season, and with today’s win, the Lyons have stolen three of the four games. The loss marks is the Golden Bears first shutout-loss of the season.
Chris Martin got the win for the Lyons pitching seven innings and striking out six. He maintained a no-hitter for 4.1 innings.
Scott Guillerault started the offense off in the top of the third when he hit a double to score Travis Anthoine. The fourth inning proved to be big for the Lyons as they scored three runs to improve their lead 4-0.
Jason Yagjian went 4-for-5 from the plate including a single to center field to score Brandon Leonard and Mark Baumer in the top of the fourth and a double in the eighth. Leonard chipped in hitting 2-for-4 for the game.
The Golden Bears could not get their bats going, as they were out hit 13-5. Jason Connelly went 2-for-4 for Western New England.
