Auburn, N.Y. -- The Eastern Connecticut State Warriors forced a decisive final game in the NCAA NY Regional at Auburn's Falcon Park with a 9-5 win over previously unbeaten Cortland. The two teams will meet Sunday at noon with the winner earning a trip to the College World Series.
Junior catcher Matt Cooney (Arlington/Arlington, Mass.) led off the sixth with a tie-breaking home run to put the Warriors ahead to stay. Eastern Connecticut added three insurance runs on a home run on an eighth-inning home run by junior center fielder Randy Re (Danbury/Danbury, Conn.). Re finished with a single, double and home run, three runs scored and four RBI's. Cooney added three hits, improving to 11-for-21 in the regional.
Cortland, who lost for the first time in 14 NCAA playoff games at Auburn, took leads in the first and third innings, and put runners on second and third in the top of the eighth with the Warriors leading 6-5. Senior outfielder Andy Mead (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville) was thrown out at home on a ground ball to the pitcher and junior Justin Davis (Griswold/Lisbon, Conn.) induced a groundout to end the inning.
Five Warrior pitchers allowed just six hits (but walked seven batters). Junior Sam Iverson (New Milford/New Milford, Conn.), the third Eastern Connecticut reliever, earned the win after giving up two hits in 2.2 innings. Davis picked up the save, giving up one hit in 1.2 innings.
Mead tripled and singled for two of Cortland's six hits. Sophomore Chris Bilyk (Ithaca/Ithaca) took the loss for Cortland, allowing four runs (all earned) in four innings of relief.
The Red Dragons' loss marked the first time they have entered the championship round undefeated and lost. Cortland has won seven regional titles; Eastern Connecticut has won 10.
