Auburn, N.Y. -- The St. Lawrence Saints recorded the program's first NCAA playoff win, eliminating the Rensselaer RedHawks with a 12-4 win in the NCAA NY Regional at Auburn's Falcon Park. St. Lawrence will face Eastern Connecticut at 7 p.m. in an elimination game Friday at 7 p.m.
Senior first baseman Jeff DiGeronimo (Tantasqua Regional/Sturbridge, Mass.) hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the fifth inning to put St. Lawrence up for good and the Saints exploded for seven runs in the eighth. Junior center fielder Matt Yaworski (Liverpool/Liverpool) hit a two-run single to highlight the rally. Yaworski scored four runs. DiGeronimo finished with two hits and scored two runs.
Senior Josh White (Westmoreland/Westmoreland) earned the win, improving to 9-1 despite seeing his scoreless inning streak end at 38.2 innings -- the second-longest streak ever by a Division III pitcher. Rensselaer scored two unearned runs in the second inning to snap the streak. White allowed five hits over seven innings, giving up two earned runs.
Sophomore second baseman Ryan Kimber (Jamesville-DeWitt/Jamesville) added three hits and junior right fielder Andy Engbretson (Orono/Long Lake, Minn.) drove in three runs to spark St. Lawrence's 12-hit attack.
Rensselaer tied the game twice, pushing across two unearned runs in the top of the second on a groundout by sophomore catcher Stevan Slusher (Penns Grove/Pedricktown, N.J.) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Matt Muscatiello (Ichabod Crane/Kinderhook) and tying the score at 3-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by junior designated hitter Jason Pollard (Hudson/Hudson).
Pollard and senior left fielder Michael Passante (Highland/Highland) each had two of Rensselaer's six hits. Senior second baseman Rich Mundy (Norwood-Norfolk/Norwood) socred two runs. Slusher singled in a run in the eighth as Rensselaer closed to within 5-4 before the Saints' seven-run explosion put the game out of reach.
The Saints (24-13) are making their second NCAA playoff appearance; they lost to Montclair State and Staten Island in the 1991 NY regionals and dropped their opening game to Eastern Connecticut this year.
Rensselaer finishes the season 34-13; the Red Hawks were making their 15th NCAA playoff appearance.
