Auburn, N.Y. -- The Cortland Red Dragons moved to within a win of claiming the NCAA NY Regional title with an 8-3 win over the Ithaca Bombers Friday at Auburn's Falcon Park. Ithaca will face the winner of Friday's Eastern Connecticut/St. Lawrence game in an elimination game Saturday at noon. The winner of that game takes on Cortland at 4 p.m., needing to beat the Red Dragons twice to claim the regional title. A second game, if necessary, would be Sunday at noon.
Freshman George Jweid (New Hartford/New Hartford) retired the first 12 Bombers and Cortland scored all eight of its runs in the first four innings.
Cortland hit eight doubles in the first four innings and finished with nine -- one short of the single-game NCAA playoff record. A double by senior third baseman Ricky Piovesan (St. Dominic/East Norwich)brought in senior center fielder Jim Basnight (St. Dominic/East Norwich), who had doubled, with the game's first run. Junior catcher Shawn Ensel (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and senior right fielder Andrew Mead (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville) recorded RBI doubles in the second; junior first baseman Travis Robinson (Ilion/Ilion) and Ensel added run-scoring doubles in the third and junior left fielder Dan Maycock (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica) doubled in Cortland's final run in the fourth.
Jweid, who won his eighth game (a Cortland freshman record) was perfect through four innings before sophomore catcher Rob Raux (Frankfort/Ilion) became the first Bomber to reach base, singling to lead off the fifth. Raux, who came around to score Ithaca's first run, finished with three of Ithaca's five hits. His two-run single in the sixth accounted for the rest of Ithaca's scoring.
Maycock went three-for-four for Cortland with a pair of doubles. Basnight and Robinson both drove in two runs. Junior second baseman Will Groff (Queensbury/Queensbury) singled twice; he has reached base by hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 43 straight games.
Ithaca junior Jeremy Peters (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica) had his nine-game winning streak snapped, allowing five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings.
