Rocky Mount, NC - Sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan (23-20) upset top-seeded Salisbury (36-9) by a 8-3 score in game one of the NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional.
Salisbury took an early lead with a two-spot in the third. With two outs in the inning, Randy Boyle became the first Sea Gull to reach base when he was hit by VWC pitcher Zach Baker. Greg Lemon then collected the Gulls’ first hit with an RBI-double right-centerfield. Two fielding errors by Marlin first baseman CJ Rhodes led to SU’s second run, unearned.
The 2-0 lead was shortlived, however, as Virginia Wesleyan battled back to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Dan Sellers reached on an error to lead off the inning, and catcher Matt Hudgins promptly blasted his ninth homerun of the season, a two-run shot to right field. Ozz Dhramapitaksok later singled and scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Phil Cadle.
The Marlins added to their lead with another two-run homer in the fifth. Sellers did the honors with his third four-bagger of the season, a shot to left field. Brent Vuyovich scored on the play, having collected a one-out single in the previous at-bat.
It would be more than enough for Virginia Wesleyan, who went on to secure the 8-3 final. Baker (5-4) earned the win, scattering seven hits and allowing three runs in six innings of work. Offensively for VWC, Dhramapitaksook was 3-for-4, while Sellers and Ricky Allred each collected two hits.
SU starter Ryan Bennick (6-2) suffered only his second loss of the season. He was chased after 4.1 innings of work, giving up five runs on three hits. Offensively, Lemon, Colin Kraus, and Alex Vitale each had two hits for the Sea Gulls.
