Rocky Mount, NC - Third-seeded Rowan University fought off elimination by defeating sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan by a 17-5 score in day two action at the Division III Baseball South Regional.
The Profs (28-14) exploded for 12 runs in the first three innings, including a six-run opening frame that saw their first six batters come around to score. Designated hitter Brian McLaughlin delivered a key two-run single to right that capped the rally.
Virginia Wesleyan (23-21) put up an early fight by tallying three runs of its own in bottom of the first. Ozz Dhramapitaksook did the damage for the Marlins with a two-out two-RBI single that cut the lead in half.
Both teams scratched a run in the second, and Rowan went on to score five more runs in the third to go up 12-4. The Profs plated two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by a two-run blast to centerfield by catcher Bobby Fox, and the 16-4 advantage was more than enough for Rowan hurler Alexy Still.
Still (3-0) settled down after giving up four runs over the first two innings to toss four straight scoreless frames. He allowed one run in the seventh, a homerun to Marlin pinch hitter Daniel Andrews, en route to the win.
VWC starter Wayne Renfrow (4-6) took the loss after giving up nine runs in two innings of work. The Marlins used six pitchers on the day.
Rowan’s Tim Edmeads added a solo blast late for the Profs, who scored in six different innings.
