Rocky Mount, NC – The sixth-seeded Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan stayed alive on Friday in the Division III Baseball South Regional, eliminating fourth-seeded Bridgewater by a 5-2 score.
Bridgewater (32-14-1) held an early 1-0 lead going into the fourth, but the Marlins (24-21) plated three runs in the inning to erase the deficit and take a 3-1 advantage. Eagle starter Nolan Shaffer walked two of the first three batters in the frame, both of which scored on RBI-doubles by Ozz Dhramapitaksook and Phil Cadle.
After allowing one run in the first, Marlin starter Chris Rivera breezed through innings two, three, and four before giving up an unearned run in the fifth. BC catcher Grant French reached on an error and came around to score on a Matt Johnson RBI-double to right field. Two batters later, Matt Steele looked to tie the game with a liner to right, but Dhramapitaksook cut down Johnson at home to preserve the Marlin lead at 3-2.
Virginia Wesleyan added two insurance runs in the eighth for the 5-2 final. Dhramapitaksook, CJ Rhodes, Phil Cadle, and Brent Vuyovich each had two hits to pace the Marlins, who ripped ten hits as a team.
VWC’s Chris Rivera (7-4) went the distance, scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs. Shaffer (3-6) took the loss for Bridgewater.
