ORANGE, Calif. - The sixth-seeded George Fox University baseball team scored an upset in the first game of the NCAA Division III West Region Championships, defeating top-seeded University of Redlands 10-3 at Hart Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Bruins – ranked No. 9 in the nation in team batting – pounded out 15 hits in victory. George Fox (28-13) scored early and often, staking a 6-0 lead after four innings. The Bruins scored a pair of runs with two outs in the first inning, and then centerfielder Drew Johnson hit a three-run home run in the second off Redlands ace Rob Walker to take a 5-0 lead. Walker surrendered eight runs, six earned in 6 1/3 innings and suffered his third loss of the year (8-3). The No. 1 seed Redlands (30-10) rallied to cut the lead in half with three runs in the fifth inning and knocked Bruins’ right-hander Derrick Jones out of the game. But George Fox scratched across single runs in the sixth and seventh and put the game out of reach with two more in the ninth. Bryan Donohue and Dan Wentzell led George Fox with three hits apiece. The Bruins, batting .356 as a team, capitalized on just about every offensive opportunity, stranding just seven runners. Ryan Garcia and Chase Beatty led Redlands going 2-for-3 at the plate. George Fox advances to play the loser of tonight’s Game 3 (Chapman/Cal State Easy Bay) Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Redlands drops into the loser’s bracket to face the loser of today’s Game 3 (Trinity/Texas Lutheran) Thursday at 12 p.m.
