ORANGE, Calif. - Trinity University (Tex.) avenged two regular season losses to Texas Lutheran University to beat the Bulldogs 11-4 in the first round of the NCAA Division III West Region championships at Hart Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers capitalized on an uncharacteristic five errors by Texas Lutheran to score four unearned runs. Trinity (34-11) scored eight times in the first three innings, getting two RBI each from shortstop Ryan Cavan and left fielder Bobby Zabor. Texas Lutheran (32-12-1), which entered the tournament as the national leader in fielding percentage (.973), committed four errors in the first three innings to aid the Tigers’ cause. Meanwhile, it was Trinity that seemed to make all the plays, with defensive gems turned in by centerfielder Nick Vera and second baseman Johnny Baugus. After giving up a solo home run to TLU’s Jacob Kaase in the first inning and an unearned run in the second, right-hander Drew Bignall settled in, allowing just two runs and four hits over eight strong innings and improved to 7-2. Vera finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Cavan, Zabor and third baseman Blake Holman each drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers. For Texas Lutheran, Dustin Spardella went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Trinity advances to play the winner of tonight’s Game 3 (Chapman/Cal State Easy Bay) Thursday at 7 p.m. Texas Lutheran drops into the loser’s bracket to face the loser of today’s Redlands Thursday at 12 p.m. in an elimination game.
