ORANGE, Calif. - Texas Lutheran left-hander Kyle Newman had four complete games this season. So Newman’s fifth complete game of the year came as no surprise to Bulldogs fans as TLU stayed alive for another day by eliminating top-ranked University of Redlands (Calif.) 3-2 at Hart Park in a loser’s bracket game of the NCAA Division III West Region championships.
The left-hander scattered six hits, struck out eight and didn’t allow an earned run, improving to 8-3 this season. No. 5 seed Texas Lutheran (33-12-1) received RBI hits from Casey Rehfeld and Jacob Kraase, and a sacrifice fly from Brett Cannon for their only scoring. Rehfeld finished 3-for-4 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Redlands (30-11) starting pitcher Kyle Gardner was equal to the task, allowing just two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, but suffered the hard luck loss. The Bulldogs couldn’t overcome leads of 2-0 and 3-1, despite rallying for single runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Redlands got a runner to second base with two outs in the ninth inning, but Newman struck out the final Bulldogs batter to end the threat.
Texas Lutheran advances to play on Friday at 3:30 p.m., but its opponent could be Cal State East Bay, Trinity (Tex.) or Chapman (Calif.) depending on the results of Thursday’s two late games.
