ORANGE, Calif. - Following a strikeout in the ninth inning, a George Fox (Ore.) batter returned to the dugout shaking his head. After dropping their fifth game this year to Cal State East Bay, the entire George Fox baseball team must be echoing those sentiments.
Down 4-3 in the eighth and facing elimination from the NCAA Division III West Region championships, Cal State East Bay (25-11) rallied to score three times in the final two innings to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament at Hart Park on Thursday afternoon.
George Fox (28-14) built a 4-2 lead after five innings thanks to a three-run burst in the fourth and capped by an RBI triple by right fielder Dan Wentzel.
But the Pioneers rallied for an unearned run in the sixth and then strung together four consecutive hits in the eighth – all with two outs – including RBI singles by outfielder Aaron Early and shortstop Chris Wallinger to complete their comeback. East Bay manufactured an insurance run in the ninth to make it 6-4.
The Pioneers have defeated the Bruins five times this season with four of the games decided by two runs or less. East Bay was led by designated hitter Lamonte Toney who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and hit a two-run homer in the second inning to stake the Pioneers to a 2-0 lead. Second baseman Ray Stokes was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three stolen bases for East Bay, which had 14 hits in the game. Matt Vieira pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his third victory of the year (3-0).
Cal State East Bay advances through the loser’s bracket to face Texas Lutheran on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, George Fox must now face the loser of Chapman/Trinity (Tex.) on Friday at 12 p.m. in an elimination game.
