ORANGE, Calif. - In the 2005 West Region finals, Texas Lutheran was beat twice by Chapman (Calif.) on the final day of the tournament and kept from advancing to its first NCAA Division III World Series. One year later, it’s the Bulldogs who will need to win two games on the final day to advance to the championships in Appleton, Wis.
Fifth-seeded Texas Lutheran (34-12-1) has battled through the loser’s bracket and advanced to the championship round of play at the West Region playoffs on the strength of a 7-4 win over fourth-seeded Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon at Hart Park. The loss eliminated East Bay (25-12) from the tournament. The Bulldogs will face Chapman on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs broke open a 4-4 tie with two runs in the seventh inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Jacob Kaase and Aaron Crais, and then added an insurance run in the eighth to make a winner out of TLU left-hander Brian Wallace, who remained undefeated this season (5-0) with a complete game.
East Bay got out of the gates quickly, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Ralph Luna, followed by the stealing of home by Anthony Quinata on a successful double-steal.
Texas Lutheran came back with two runs in the second on a two-run single by Dustin Spardella and two more in the third when Brett Cannon tripled in a run and scored. Cannon and Crais finished 4-for-5 each as the Bulldogs pounded out 16 hits.
The Pioneers rallied for two more in the third to tie the game 4-4. Patrick Whelly led East Bay with three hits and two runs scored.
Unbeaten Chapman (2-0) has already earned a berth in the championship round, but whether they will need to beaten twice on Saturday by Texas Lutheran or whether three teams with one loss each will remain will be determined in Friday night’s finale. The winner of Friday afternoon’s George Fox (Ore.) and Trinity (Tex.) game will face Chapman at 8 p.m. and play for a berth in the finals.
