ORANGE, Calif. - The George Fox (Ore.) baseball team put on a hitting clinic while eliminating Trinity (Tex.) from the NCAA Division III West Region championships at Hart Park on Friday afternoon, handing the Tigers an 11-5 defeat. The Bruins crushed a tournament-high 21 hits and scored at least once in all but the third and eighth innings.
With the win, George Fox (29-14) earned a date with unbeaten Chapman tonight at 8 p.m. A loss would eliminate the Bruins, but a win would put them into the championship game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. George Fox won two of three from Chapman earlier this month in Newberg, Ore.
The Bruins built a 9-0 lead after six innings, led by Bryan Donohue who went 5-for-5 with three runs scored. Also, Bo Thunell and Drew Johnson were 3-for-4 each. Thunell drove in three runs and Johnson added a pair of stolen bases in the win.
Trinity (34-13) finally got on the board in the seventh inning with a pair of runs and got a three-run homer from J.B. Sowyrda in the eighth to close the gap a little. Sowyrda was 2-for-3 and Bobby Zabor added a pair of hits and a run scored for
Trinity. Right-hander Nick Hedgecock (4-2) went the distance for the Bruins, scattering 10 hits and striking out three.
Trinity became the third team eliminated from the six-team tournament.
