Lynchburg’s Andrea Fleming Named ODAC Field Hockey Player-of-the-Year


SALEM, VALynchburg College junior Andrea Fleming has been named the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) field hockey Player-of-the-Year as the league announced the all-conference teams on Friday.  Lynchburg and Roanoke led the way with four players garnering first or second-team honors.  Seven different teams had at least one representative on the league’s first-team.


A native of Milford, Del., Fleming leads all NCAA Divisions with 32 goals in 2004, including seven game-winners and seven assists. She earned first-team All-ODAC honors in 2003 along with first-team All-State and second-team All-Region accolades. Fleming was a second-team All-ODAC selection in her freshman year. Fleming currently ranks third in school history for goals in a season and fourth for career goals.

 

Roanoke’s Liz Hudson was voted Freshman-of-the-Year after scoring a team best 17 goals. She added four assists for 38 points which tied for fourth best in the ODAC.  Hudson, from Culpepper, Va., led the Maroons with four game-winning goals.

 

For the sixth time in her career LC’s Enza Steele was honored by her peers by being named the 2004 Coach-of-the-Year.  Steele led the Hornets to a perfect 9-0 record in ODAC play and they are currently 15-4 overall.

 

Lynchburg College will be the site for the crowning of the ODAC’s 2004 field hockey champion.  The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday and the finals on Sunday.

 
The home standing and top-seeded Hornets will take on the fifth-seeded Maroons at 12:00 p.m.  The two teams squared off on the final day of the regular season with the Hornets coming away with a 4-1 road win.

 

The other semifinal match pits the number-two seed Virginia Wesleyan against the third seeded Generals of Washington and Lee.  VWC advanced to the semifinals with a 4-3, overtime win against Randolph-Macon.  W&L downed Bridgewater 4-2 in quarterfinal play to advance.  These two teams met on October 23rd with the Marlins scoring a 3-1 win.   Game time is slated for 2:30 p.m.


The championship game takes place at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday with the winner receiving the ODAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
