ROANOKE, Va. --- The office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) is pleased to announce the hiring of Jean Willi as interim Director of Athletics at Hollins University. Willi will begin the day-to-day operations of the department effective November 29th.
Willi recently retired from Bridgewater College after having served at the institution for a number of years. She had returned to her alma mater after earning a Master’s degree at nearby James Madison University. Upon her return to Bridgewater, Willi served in a variety of roles over the years. She began as an assistant coach for several sports before settling in with the basketball program. After the retirement of longtime coach Laura Mapp, Willi took the reins of the Eagles’ program in 1996. Over her 20 years on the bench, she amassed an overall record of 375-191, including winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship in 1999 and again in 2008.
In addition to coaching, Willi served the college as Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), Associate Athletic Director, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, SAAC chair, and several other areas.
“I owe so much to Curt Kendall, Bridgewater College Athletic Director, for having the confidence he had in me to allow me to work in so many aspects of the department at Bridgewater.” Willi continued, “My exposure to so many different roles in the day-to-day operations of an NCAA athletic department has prepared me for this opportunity and I look forward to getting started.”
Being no stranger to the ODAC, Willi was quick to take Hollins’ call. “I am extremely humbled and honored that Hollins would reach out with this opportunity. As a life-long member of the ODAC, I look forward to working with my colleagues from the different schools as well as the conference office.”
Hollins’ Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Trish Hammer, announced Willi’s appointment to the current staff on Wednesday morning. “I am excited about Jean taking the position and I am confident she will continue to move our athletics programs forward.”
