Randolph-Macon’s Justin Wansley Named ODAC Men’s Basketball Player-of-the-Year

 

SALEM, VA – Randolph-Macon junior forward Justin Wansley was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men’s Basketball Player-of-the-Year Friday evening at the league’s men’s basketball tournament banquet at the Salem Civic Center.

 

Wansley, who garnered Freshman-of-Year honors in 2002-03 and first-team accolades last season,  is third in the league in with 18.6 points a game and leads the league with 10.2 rebounds a contest.  The Richmond, Va., native has led the Yellow Jackets in scoring on 15 occasions and rebounding 17 times.  He also ranks in the top 10 of four ODAC statistical categories, including scoring, rebounding, FG percentage and blocked shots.

 

Bridgewater’s Bill Leatherman was honored by his peers with his fourth Coach-of-the-Year honor.  Now in his 20th season patrolling the sidelines in the ODAC, Leatherman led his team to a 17-8, overall record, a 12-6 mark in the league and the third-seed in this weekend’s tournament.  On Jan. 22nd, with a 80-75 win over Eastern Mennonite, he notched his 300th career victory

 

Kerry Atkinson from Guilford was named the league’s Freshman-of-the-Year. Atkinson led the Quakers in scoring on 11 occasions, including a season high 29 at Hampden-Sydney.  For the season, Atkinson averaged 13 points in just over 20 minutes of action per game.

 

The ODAC Men’s Basketball Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year Award was given to Clay Michael of Bridgewater.  A second-team All-ODAC performer, Michael is averaging 28.5 minutes a game. He leads BC in rebounding and is second in scoring.  He has recorded nine double-doubles on the season and has been a three-year starter on his team.  In the classroom, he has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.8, majoring in history with a minor in political science.
