H-SC Names Epperson New AD
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- College President Dr.
Chris Howard announced this week that Richard Epperson '79 has been
appointed the next Director of Athletics. Epperson, currently
Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement at
H-SC, will assume his new duties on January 1, 2011 following
the retirement of current Athletic Director Joe Bush.
Epperson was appointed to his current position of Assistant VP for
Institutional Advancement in March of 2010, but he has been with
the College since August of 1997. He spent the past six years as
Assistant VP for Development and Alumni Relations. His duties
during that time included oversight of athletic fundraising
initiatives.
From 2000-04, he served the College as the Director of
Development. Prior to moving to development, Epperson was the
Director of Alumni Relations where he coordinated the
reorganization of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association. He also
helped increase attendance, involvement, and financial support from
alumni groups across the nation.
He served as the president of the Hampden-Sydney College Southside
Virginia Alumni Club from 1995-97.
Epperson spent 18 years working at the high school level initially
as a teacher and coach at Gill School in Richmond, Virginia then at
his alma mater Prince Edward Academy in Farmville,
Virginia. After a successful coaching career he became
Athletic Director and later served as Headmaster of both Prince
Edward Academy and Fuqua School. He is a member of his high
school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Epperson played baseball at
H-SC from 1975-79.
Epperson graduated from Hampden-Sydney in the spring of 1979
with a degree in Government and Foreign Affairs. In 1991, he
received his Master of Science in School Administration from
Longwood University.
He and his wife Debbie reside in Farmville.
