SBC Donates Golf Proceeds to SOVA

SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- The Sweet Briar College athletic department hosted its annual Friends of Athletics Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 5 at Winton Country Club in Clifford, Va.  The outing, in its seventh year, is a fundraiser for Vixen Athletics.  Unique for 2012, half of all proceeds were donated to Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA).  The golf tournament marked the first time Vixen Athletics and SOVA teamed up for a fundraiser event.

Teresa Boylan, head tennis coach and senior woman’s administrator organized the golf tournament.  With the help of the Vixen Athletics staff and SBC student-athletes, Boylan and athletic director Kelly Morrison were able to present SOVA a donation in the amount of $2,600.00.

Boylan, who also serves as the chair of SBC’s Friends of Athletics, commented that, “to have this event partnered with SOVA was one of many highlights.  The tournament capped a great year of Vixen Athletics working with Special Olympics. It is a lot of fun to raise some extra dollars and be involved in all the athletes' development.  The partnership really puts the athletes first on both sides."

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), of which Sweet Briar is a member, officially partnered with SOVA this past fall.  SBC served as the host site for an ODAC/SOVA Volleyball Celebration in November and most recently, Vixen student-athletes organized a Vixen Dash for regional SOVA Special Olympians.  Both the Volleyball Celebration and Vixen Dash took place in Upchurch Field House in SBC’s Fitness and Athletic Center.

Just after the 1:30 p.m. shotgun start, Winton golf pro Chuck Beasley conducted a clinic for Special Olympians.  The clinic offered another opportunity for Vixen student-athletes to work closely with Special Olympians in an athletic setting and foster the developing relationship between SOVA and Vixen Athletics.

At the conclusion of the golf tournament, participants were treated to an El Mariachi Fiesta Dinner and Awards Ceremony right at Winton.  During dinner, winners were announced and prizes awarded.  2012 Vixen Sponsors include: Bennett-Hall, Robert Bullett, The Greenwood Family, The Hall Family, Kjellstrom & Lee Construction, Lynchburg Bus Service, The Raifsnider Family, Rockingham Group and Wills Financial Group.
