ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
THRU WEEK PRIOR TO: FEBRUARY 20, 2012

BASEBALL
Corey Armentrout, Bridgewater, Freshman,
Pitcher
Armentrout, a freshman from
Harrisonburg, Va., made two appearances and was 1-1 with a 0.00 ERA
in 10 innings pitched. Armentrout took the loss when he game up an
unearned run in the 11th in a 2-1 loss to Ferrum. He allowed just
one hit while striking out three and walking two in four-plus
innings on the mound. He picked up the win with six shutout innings
as the Eagles defeated No. 5 Cortland State, 4-1. Armetrout allowed
just two hits while striking out five and walking two.

BASEBALL
John Macon Smith, Guilfrod, Sophomore,
Infielder
Smith a sophomore from Greensboro,
N.C., helped the Quakers to a 2-1 week with six hits, including
three homers, four runs and six RBI. He also had a .750 on-base
percentage and a 1.778 slugging percentage for the week. Smith went
5-for-7 with a double, three homers and six RBI in Guilford’s
doubleheader sweep of Maryville. He belted a three-run shot
followed by a solo blast in the opening-game win and finished with
three hits and four RBI in the contest. He homered in his first at
bat of the nightcap and hit a game-tying double in the bottom of
the seventh. Smith had two hits and two RBI in the game. He also
went 1-for-3 in a mid-week game with Averett.

INDOOR TRACK
Eric Van Dunk, Lynchburg, Junior,
Throws
Van Dunk, a junior from Mahwah, N.J.,
won the shot put with a career-best toss of 49'11.75", which puts
him second in the ODAC. He also took fourth in the weight throw
with a heave of 38’06.75” at the VMI Relays.

INDOOR TRACK
LaCear Hubbard, Lynchburg, Junior,
Jumps/Sprints
Hubbard, a junior from Madison
Heights, Va., won the triple jump and the long jump competitions on
Saturday at the VMI Winter Relays. Hubbard jumped 36'7" in the
triple jump and 17'9.5" in the long jump. She currently sits 23rd
in the nation in the triple jump and 27th in the long jump. Hubbard
also finished second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.60.
Hubbard sits atop the ODAC in the long jump and triple jump
standings after her performances on Saturday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Chris Astorga, Virginia Wesleyan, Junior,
Forward
Astorga, a junior from Suffolk, Va.,
helped the Marlins to three wins in the final week of the season,
including two on Saturday and Sunday, to secure the top seed in the
ODAC Tournament. Astorga posted his seventh 20+ points performance
in a regular-season ending 77-49 win over Washington & Lee
University. His last basket of the game pushed him over the 1,000
point plateau, making him the 23rd member of the 1,000 Point Club
and the second this season for VWC, the latter a program first. For
the week, Astorga shot 53% from the field, including 42% from the
three-point territory. He averaged 18.7 points and 7.0 rebounds. He
notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards in a win over
Lynchburg.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Greg Nash, Guilford, Senior,
Attack
Nash, a senior from Walpole, Mass.,
helped the Quakers open the 2012 campaign 2-0 with nine points on
seven goals and two assists last week. He hit for a career-best
five goals and one helper in Guilford's season-opening 14-4 win
over Shorter. Nash followed that up with two goals and another
assist in a 14-13 last second win over Ferrum. Nash scored both of
his goals as part of GC's 5-1 run to end the game. His first game
with 4:14 to play, but his last would be most poignant as he
stopped the clock with 1.9-seconds to play to put the Quakers'
ahead and clinch their second win.

MEN'S TENNIS
Clayton Hamilton, Guilford, Senior, No. 2
Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Hamilton, a senior from Greensboro,
N.C., helped the Quakers to a 2-0 week by winning each of his four
matches. Hamilton went 2-0 at No. 2 singles, claiming an 8-3 win
over Bluefield and a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Greensboro. In No. 1
doubles play, Hamilton teamed with Tyler Mercier to post wins of
8-2 (Bluefield) and 8-3 (Greensboro).

SOFTBALL
Kaitlyn Morris, Lynchburg, Freshman,
Pitcher
Morris, a freshman from Elkton, Va.,
led the Hornets to two wins in the first collegiate games of her
career. She threw two complete games, allowing 15 hits and three
walks over 14 innings with three strikeouts. She held Greensboro to
just one run in a 4-1 result for her first collegiate victory. She
followed that up with a 4-3 win in which she allowed two earned
runs (one unearned).

SOFTBALL
Lauren Stevenson, Randolph, Junior,
Outfielder
Stevenson, a junior from Virginia
Beach, Va., helped Randolph start the season with two wins, both
one run victories over Meredith College. The WildCat left fielder
had two hits in each game, also posting a pair of stolen bases in
each contest. She also scored three runs and earned a walk as she
reached base in five of her first seven plate appearances of the
season. Stevenson now has hits in 31 of her last 34 games,
including 17 multi-hit games during that span, dating back to last
season.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Bianca Ygarza, Eastern Mennonite,
Sophomore, Forward
Ygarza, a sophomore from Conestoga,
Pa., picked up her second weekly award of the season after helping
the Royals to three wins in the final week to lock up the second
seed in the ODAC Tournament. Ygarza sliced her way to a career high
29 points in Friday's 88-59 triumph over Emory & Henry, going
11-15 from the floor, with eight rebounds. In Saturday's clash at
Guilford, she again led all scorers with 19 points, hitting 8-of-12
shots. She also notched 12 points and eight boards in a week
opening win against Randolph. In three games last week, Ygarza
averaged 20.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, shooting 65% from the floor
(24-37). Entering the postseason, Ygarza is 10th in the ODAC with
14.1 PPG, eighth with 7.2 RPG, second with 110 FTs, and second with
a 56.4 FG%.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
E'leyna Garcia, Guilford, Sophomore,
Attack
Garcia, a sophomore from Plantationa,
Fla., scored a team-high 12 points with 10 goals and two assists in
the Quakers’ first two games, helping GC to a 1-1 start to
the 2012 campaign. She notched four goals and an assist in
Guilford’s 17-16 season-opening win over Berry. She added a
team-high six goals and one assist in a loss to Sewanee. She had a
hand in seven of Guilford’s 10 goals against the Tigers.
Garcia moved into 19th place on Guilford’s career scoring
chart with 76 points (55 goals, 21 assists).

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Allison Hupalo, Washington and Lee,
Freshman, No. 1 Singles, No. 2 Doubles
Hupalo, a freshman from Weston, Mass.,
started off her first spring campaign in Lexington by winning a
pair of matches at No. 1 singles and her lone doubles contest at
the second ladder position. Against Division I Radford University,
Hupalo scored a 6-0, 6-4 win over her opponent. In the first
conference match of the season, Hupalo topped Bridgewater's No. 1
player 6-0, 6-0, and then teamed with Sallie Griffin for an 8-0 win
in doubles action.
