ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

THRU WEEK PRIOR TO: MARCH 19, 2012

 

BASEBALL
Pat Smith, Washington and Lee, Senior, Pitcher
Smith, a senior from Basking Ridge, N.J., helped the Generals to a 2-1 comeback victory over Guilford College as he fired a nine-inning complete game in Lexington on Saturday. He allowed an unearned and just four hits in stifling the Quakers' offense. He walked two and fanned six on the way to his first win of the campaign. Smith lowered his earned run average to 1.67, second-best in the conference.

BASEBALL
Michael Del Buono, Lynchburg, Junior, 2nd Base
Del Buono, a junior from Clifton, Va., registered helped the Hornets to a 5-1 week with six multi-hit games on the way to a .478 batting average (11-for-23). Among his 11 hits were four extra-base hits including a double, triple and a pair of homeruns, which he smacked against Tufts University. Del Buono scored nine runs and drove in 10 more on the week. He had three runs batted in against Ferrum, Averett and Tufts to open the week. He also walked twice for 20 total bases. Del Buono is eighth in the ODAC with a .397 batting average, and he's first with four triples and a .679 slugging percentage. His four homers are also #2 in the league.

GOLF
Noah Ratner, Guilford, Junior
Ratner, a junior from continues to light up the NCAA Division III golfing ranks as he won yet another tournament over the weekend. Ratner led the Quakers to their fourth team title of the season with his school record-tying fourth medalist honor at the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate. He shot 77-76-78--231 to win the 50-man tournament in South Carolina by five strokes. He carded the low second-round score and the second-lowest first- and third-round totals. Ratner's fourth win ties the school record set by Bill Brooks in 1983.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Max Voumard, Lynchburg, Junior, Midfielder
Voumard, a junior from Cape May, N.J., scored 3:44 into overtime to lead the sixth-ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team to a 13-12 victory at #13 Roanoke College in ODAC play Saturday evening. Voumard finished the day with three goals on eight shots with one assist and a ground ball. He also helped the Hornets top McDaniel, 11-5, earlier in the week.

MEN'S TENNIS
Hayden White, Washington and Lee, Junior, No. 1 Singles, No. 1/2 Doubles
White, a junior from Baltimore, Md., helped lead the Generals to a pair of wins over ranked opponents during the week by going 2-0 in both singles and doubles play. In a 5-3 win over 23rd-ranked Case Western Reserve on Saturday, he notched a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles and then teamed with first-year Taylor Shamshiri for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. In a 5-4 win over 16th-ranked Mary Washington on Sunday, he logged a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and then posted an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles with Shamshiri. For the season, White has registered a 13-5 singles record and an 8-5 doubles mark.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Johnathan Smith, Guilford, Sophomore, Sprints
Smith, a sophomore from Conyers, Ga., continued right where he left off his All-American indoor campaign as he won the 200-meter dash and placed sixth in the 100-meter dash at the Wake Forest Open. He set school records in both events and established the fastest times in both events in NCAA Division III in the early outdoor season. Smith defeated 112 sprinters, mostly from higher NCAA divisions, to win the 200-dash in 21.26, which broke his own standard set a year ago. He eclipsed the ODAC and school records in the 100-dash, posting a mark of 10.53 seconds in the preliminaries (Melvin Queen, BC, 10.58 in 2008), which was the day’s second-fastest time. He finished sixth in the finals (10.68), tops among Division III contestants as he was the lone D-III runner in a filed of 63.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Janey Fugate, Washington and Lee, Freshman, Hurdles
Fugate, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., finished first overall in 400-meter hurdles and set a new school record with a time of 1:04.24, eclipsing the old mark of 1:04.45. The time is the top mark in the ODAC in the early season. Fugate also ran on the 4x100-meter relay team that took fourth overall and first among NCAA Division III competition with a time of 51.55.

SOFTBALL
Kristina Karagiorgis, Virginia Wesleyan, Freshman, Pitcher
Karagiorgis, a freshman from Ashburn, Va., helped the Marlins to a 3-1 week that included a split with #18 Salisbury and a sweep of ODAC-foe Guilford. Karagiorgis hurled a pair of complete game shutouts. She opened the week by surrendering just three hits and a pair of walks in a seven-inning whitewashing of Salisbury. She came back with a four-hitter against Guilford while offering just one free pass in six innings. She struck out four batters in each outing. At the dish, Karagiorgis helped her cause with five hits, two runs scored and three runs batted in.

SOFTBALL
Lisa Lee, Eastern Mennonite, Senior, 3rd Base/Pitcher
Lee, a senior from Buckingham, Va., was effecting in the leadoff spot for EMU this week, leading the Royals to a 5-1 record. She batted 10-for-21, including seven extra base hits for a .476 batting average and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Lee hit four doubles, two triples and a homerun during the week, and scored eight times. She triggered an eight-run first inning in a game at Mary Washington, scoring twice and knocking in three with a bases loaded triple during the frame. Sunday in a 5-2 win over York, Lee was 3-for-4 with two doubles and another triple. She drove in six runs on the week. Lee in fifth in the ODAC in doubles, triples, total bases, fifth in runs, and fourth in homeruns.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Kathleen Wager, Roanoke, Junior, Midfielder
Wager, a junior from Lexington, Va., helped the Maroons to a pair of wins last week by scoring 10 goals and dishing out five assists in victories over Fitchburg St. and Wittenberg. She scored a career-best eight goals and handed out three assists in the 17-10 victory over Fitchburg St. on Tuesday. On Sunday vs. Wittenberg, she had two goals and two assists in the non-conference win. Wager leads Roanoke with 20 goals scored and is second with 27 points.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Katy Bergey, Bridgewater, Sophomore, No. 2 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Bergey, a sophomore from Harrisonburg, Va., led the Bridgewater Eagles women’s tennis team to a 2-0 week on the courts including a big conference victory over Hollins. Bergey opened the week with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at her number two singles post against R-MC’s Morgan Parks before knocking off Hollins’ Victoria Coffee by a 6-2, 6-4 tally to move to 2-0 in singles play on the week. With doubles teammate Katie Gordon, Bergey picked up an easy 8-0 win in top flight doubles action against the Yellow Jackets before the duo dropped a tight 8-6 match to the Montoya sisters from Hollins.
