ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: September 4, 2012

 

FOOTBALL
Paul Forney , Emory & Henry , Jr. , Linebacker
Forney, a junior from Newton, N.C., helped the Wasps started the season 2-0 by leading a dominating defensive performance in a 21-8 win on the road at Maryville College (Tenn.). Forney led the unit with 12 total tackles (5 solo stops) that included 1.5 tackles for a loss for minus-10 yards. He also teamed up with Michael Shipley on a quarterback sack. Forney's biggest play of the day came in the third quarter when he charred the ball loose from Maryville's Blake Williams and Evan Williamson picked it up at the MC four-yard line and returned it to the end zone for a Wasps' touchdown. On the day, E&H allowed just 166 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers.

FOOTBALL
Nash Nance , Hampden-Sydney , So. , Quarterback
Nance, a sophomore from Calhoun, Ga., had a stellar home debut in leading the Tigers to a 42-20 triumph over Christopher Newport in the first ever meeting between the two football programs. Nance saw only six throws miss the target as he completed 25-of-31 passes for 339 yards and an ODAC early-season game-high five touchdowns without an interception. He also ran the ball seven times for 42 yards. Nance completed passes to 10 different receivers with three of his touchdown passes covering more than 30 yards including a pair of 36-yard strikes to Holton Walker and a 41-yard scoring play to Michael Mey. His efforts led to five touchdowns in seven first-half possessions on the way to a 35-0 lead at the intermission.

FIELD HOCKEY
Alexandra Darrow, Shenandoah, Freshman, Attack
Darrow, a freshman from Chesapeake, Va., helped lead the Hornets to a 2-1 week with a pair of goals and three assists throughout the three games. In a 4-1 win over Hood, Darrow scored once and dished out a pair of helpers. She followed that by notching the game-winning tally in a 2-1 win over Frostburg State. She finished her with an assist in a 2-1 loss to Christopher Newport.

MEN'S SOCCER
Sawyer Janes, Bridgewater, Junior, Forward
Janes, a junior from Waynesboro, Va., put together a banner week that included a pair of game-deciding goals. In a 2-1 over Southern Virginia, Janes put the Eagles up 2-0 in the 67th minute with his first goal of the season. He followed with a game-tying assist in the Eagles' eventual victory over St. Mary's, 2-1. On Sunday, Janes helped the Eagles to their third straight 2-1 triumph as he unlocked a 1-1 game by slotting his shot over the Salisbury keeper in the 72nd minute to push the Eagles ahead of the 12th-ranked Sea Gulls.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Bre Ingargiola, Virginia Wesleyan, Senior, Forward
Ingargiola, a senior from Bayport, N.Y., scored at least one goal in every game of a 3-0 week for Virginia Wesleyan. She helped the Marlins to a 5-1 win over Hampton Roads rival Christopher Newport with two goals on Wednesday. On Saturday, she notched the game's lone tally to catapult the Marlins to a 1-0 win over previously undefeated Richard Stockton College. She capped her week with a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win over the College of Mt. St. Joseph (Ohio). Ingargiola has scored at least one goal in four straight games and now leads VWC in scoring with 11 points. She's second in the ODAC in points and goals scored (5).

VOLLEYBALL
Kala Guy, Virginia Wesleyan, Senior, Outside Hitter
Guy, a senior from Fishersville, Va., helped lead VWC to a 4-1 week, including a 4-0 run through the Hollins Invitational. She began her week by setting a VWC program record with 27 kills in a tough loss at North Carolina Wesleyan College. But, she came back strong in the Hollins tourney to lead the Marlins with a total of 48 kills, including 20 against Gettysburg College. She also ranked second for the Marlins in total blocks (6) and digs (35). She has increased her kills total to 968, putting her on track to become only the fourth VWC volleyball player to surpass 1,000 kills in a career.

CROSS COUNTRY
Andris Goncarovs, Guilford, Junior
Goncarovs, a junior from Ithaca, N.Y., narrowly missed out on his first event victory of the season on Saturday as he competed in the UNC-Wilimington Invitational. He finished with a time of 15:43.14, which was just .2 seconds behind the winner from East Carolina University. Neverthless, Goncarovs time was the second-fastest over a five-kilometer course in school history.

CROSS COUNTRY
Lauren Schultz, Washington and Lee, Senior
Schultz, a from Hopkington, Mass., helped lead Washington and Lee to the team title at the W&L Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Schultz placed first overall with a time of 20:36.00 over the five-kilometer course. Her time was 21 seconds faster than the second place finisher, teammate Molly Ortiz.
