ODAC Men’s Soccer Pairings Set
VWC Earns Top
Spot, Slides Past HSC and W&L
October 23, 2007
SALEM, Va. ---
Hampden-Sydney College
and Washington & Lee University sat tied atop the ODAC
men’s soccer standings going into their regular
season-ending clash on Tuesday, but neither came out
victorious as the game ended dead-locked 1-1 after a
pair of overtime periods.
Virginia Wesleyan College took advantage of that result,
earning the upcoming conference tournament’s top seed
after defeating Randolph-Macon College 2-1.
Hampden-Sydney was awarded the #2 seed over Washington &
Lee through the ODAC’s five-point tie-breaking
procedure. Roanoke College occupies the fourth spot
while Randolph-Macon and Lynchburg College sit fifth and
sixth going into the tournament. Eastern Mennonite
University and Guilford College round out the field as
the seventh and eighth seeds, respectively.
The
Marlins (15-2-0, 7-2-0 ODAC) bring the conference’s top
attack to the tournament, averaging nearly three goals
per contest. They also know how to defend their net,
surrendering only 11 goals this season, second-fewest in
the ODAC to Washington & Lee (seven goals allowed).
VWC’s Brandon Massie finished atop the conference in
every major offensive category with 39 total points
(2.29 per game) on 15 goals and nine assists. Seven of
his 15 tallies proved game winners.
Hampden-Sydney (10-5-3, 6-1-2) joins VWC and W&L atop
the conference in protecting its defensive third of the
field. The Tigers gave up 22 goals this season,
third-best in the conference. HSC is no stranger to
celebrating goals, having filled the net 33 times this
season. Jason Butler (four goals, seven assists) and
Jason Powell (six goals) spearhead the Tigers’ attack.
Josh
Dodds (nine goals, one assist) and Jack Palmer (five
goals, three assists) head Washington & Lee’s (10-2-3,
6-1-2) front line, but it’s defense that works best for
the Generals. Goalkeeper Ted Sheedy recorded six
shutouts this season, tied with HSC’s John Robert Plyler.
The W&L defense played its way to the top goal against
average in the conference (0.44 GAA).
